Reporter Turned Mommy

Pre-school 180

I am on a high right now. That’s because Blake was WONDERFUL today at Mommy and Me Pre-school! He was a completely different child.

When it was time to put the toys away, Blake turned to me and said, “I sit in mommy’s lap?”. I quickly answered “Yes” and he got his own carpet square and was one of the first kids to sit down. (This is a HUGE change from three weeks ago. See THIS POST for details) I didn’t want to do anything to rock the boat. I was afraid to make eye contact with the other moms or even breathe, for fear that this good behavior would disappear!

Thankfully, it didn’t. Blake sang the songs, listened to the teacher, and surprise of all surprises, he even walked up to the chalkboard when the teacher called his name and placed a cloud on the board, all by himself. I seriously thought we were MONTHS away from him doing that!

I think repetition is the key. This was our third week of pre-school and we also started taking him to  Church Sunday School. This, combined with practice at home, is what I believe led to today’s turn around. I am just so proud of my little guy!

How long did it take your kids to “get it” when it came to a new activity? I plan on spending the rest of the day basking in the glow of this one small victory, because who knows what next week will bring?!!

Mommy and Me Pre-school

As a parent, we have those moments we dream about, like when your child takes their first steps, opens a birthday present we know they will love, or first says “I love you”.

I had a vision in my mind of what our first day of “Mommy and Me Pre-school” would be like. My two-year old, Blake, would be the star pupil, sitting quietly, learning new shapes and colors, while occasionally turning around to look up at me and smile. I would be so proud, photographing all the adorable moments. Well, this was another parenting moment that was not at ALL how I pictured it!

The class, which is once a week for an hour at a local church, started off very smoothly. Blake excitedly walked in and started playing. I call these pictures the “calm before the storm”.

Image

Here Blake is with his teacher, Miss Melody. She helped each child put their hand-print in a children’s bible. So sweet.

Image

The first 30-40 minutes of the class were spent playing and socializing. Blake and I are good at that! It also helps that I already knew three of the moms and their children from Gymboree class.

Image

Then it came time to put the toys away and do activities in “circle time”. Here’s where things get interesting. My little angel threw a holy tantrum! We’re not just talking a few tears. We’re talking a throwing himself on the floor, screaming meltdown because he wasn’t ready to stop playing. As I struggled to pick him up (keep in mind I’m nearly 8 months pregnant!), and calm him down, I noticed all the other angelic two-year olds sitting quietly in a circle, waiting for the next activity to begin. Blake continued his fit and continuously ran out the door of the pre-school room, into the hallway. As mothers gave me sympathetic looks, I was trying to figure out how to best handle this situation. I didn’t want to physically force him into the circle. I knew that would only make matters worse. So while all the kids sang songs and listened to a story, Blake and I watched from the hallway. Between my frustration and pregnancy hormones, I almost burst into tears!

So following our first day of “school”, I sent an apologetic e-mail to the teacher, also asking for advice on how to handle my strong-willed toddler. Luckily, she was more than understanding and gave me some great tips. She says many toddlers have a hard time transitioning from play time to circle time and suggested I give him a special treat, like a juice box, when it is time to stop playing. We have also been practicing transitions at home, so that he is hopefully more prepared for what to expect at school.

We go back tomorrow, so we will see how it goes! I’ve got my fingers crossed!

Have any of you had similar experiences? If so, I’d love to hear them and your advice!

Dog Days of Summer and Avocado Ice Pops!

It’s been more than a month since I’ve blogged. I’ve basically decided to take most of the summer off from blogging because I’m not always in a place with a great internet connection. As I’ve mentioned before, we spend a lot of our summer at the Lake Erie Islands, (think the Hamptons for Clevelanders, only MUCH more laid back! haha) and my cell phone and internet connections there are very spotty.

It’s been a great summer so far. I am now more than half-way through my pregnancy and Blake is growing and learning more everyday! Here’s a look at some of the things we’ve been up to.

Image

We took Blake to Cedar Point one Saturday in June. He was able to ride four rides in SnoopyLand with Mommy and Daddy! He liked three of the four, and is now obsessed with Snoopy!

Image

Image

Blake also loves boating! This was a huge relief. We took him on the boat last summer, too, but he was so little and we weren’t sure how he would do this summer. Luckily, he loves it!

Image

The days are flying by. I think the following picture sums up what summer is all about! No caption needed! :)

Image

I’ve also started some new activities. I’m now doing Aqua Zumba and I love it!

Image

They offer it at our local YMCA and I’m doing it with a girlfriend of mine who is also pregnant. It’s a great workout, especially now! I’d never done Zumba before and I love that I can do the moves underwater and no one can tell if I’m doing them correctly! :)

I’ve also tried a few new summer recipes that the whole family is enjoying. The one I’m going to share sounds weird, but if you like avocados, you will like these….frozen avocado pops!

Blake loves them!

Image

I got the recipe from People Magazine and Chicago chef Rick Bayless.

Here it is…

1. Boil 2 cups water

2. Add 1 cup sugar and summer until dissolved, cool completely

3. Mash 2 medium avocados

4. Stir in water and 1/2 cup lime juice and fold in 1/2 cup chopped mint (I skipped the mint)

5. Pour into ice pop molds and freeze overnight

If you make these, let me know what you think!

I hope you all are enjoying your summer as much as we are. I’ll be updating as much as I can. In the meantime, relish this time of year…it’s definitely my favorite!

Beating the Heat…in Pictures!

Between chasing a toddler, being pregnant and trying to keep our house in order, I’ve been busy!

Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.

Image

Our pool is open! We absolutely love it! Since this is our first summer with a pool, we needed pool furniture, pool toys, etc. I’ve been trying to get all the essentials.

Image

Water tables are awesome. Last year, Blake was still too small to appreciate them. This year, he loves it! Here he is splashing and having a blast with his idol, his ten year old cousin Sean.

Good thing we had some ways to cool off, too. Our air conditioning unit broke over the weekend. It was 86 degrees in our house on Monday and about 95 outside! The unit is being repaired as I write this blog.

Image

What child doesn’t love a golf cart? We have a house at one of the  Lake Erie Islands and we love to use our golf cart while there. Blake absolutely loves it! Check out his “cool dudes”…that’s what he calls sunglasses! My mom taught him that one.

Image

Our little guy is now old enough to love kiddie pools! Here he and Daddy are at one of the pools at the islands. Only problem? It was impossible to explain to him why all kids had to get out of the pool for 10 minutes when the lifeguards blew their whistle. Try explaining break time to an almost two year old!?

Image

After all that activity, time for a snooze! As you can see, our summer is off to a great start. I hope yours is, too! What do your kids like doing outside?

When to start potty training…

I think it’s time. My little guy is giving me signs and I’m going to start potty training.

As a first time mom, I’ll be the first to admit, I really don’t know what I’m doing. My instincts are telling me to just go with the flow and start the training using good ole’ common sense. I don’t think I need any books to show me how to teach my little one to use the potty. What do you think?

At the suggestion of a friend (thanks Danielle!) I bought a little baby seat to place on top of our “grown-up” potty. I purchased one similar to this…

We will see if it works. I’m praying it does because the thought of cleaning out a little baby potty makes me cringe!

While I’m not planning on buying any potty training books for me, I do think I’ll get one for Blake, to help him get used to the idea.

Blake is now 21 months old and my pediatrician said most toddlers are potty trained between 2.5 and 3.5. However, like I said, my little guy is giving me signs so I’m going to start now. I would love to have him potty trained before the new baby arrives late this fall!

Did you buy any potty training books for your kiddos or even to help you teach your little one? How long did it take you to potty train your toddler? I would really appreciate any tips!

A visit to the Easter Bunny!

image

This weekend, we took baby boy to see the Easter Bunny! My husband and I were convinced this visit would NOT go well. Blake was terrified of Santa and we have a priceless picture of him crying his eyes out!
We were pleasantly surprised, however, that he liked the Easter Bunny! I think there are a few reasons why….
1. We didn’t leave his side. You can see hubby in this picture! We stepped away during his picture with Santa and we think that added to his anxiety.

2. The Easter Bunny looks like a big, fluffy, cartoon character! I thought the sight of a large bunny, dressed with glasses, might scare Blake. It was just the opposite. He thought the Easter Bunny was hilarious, as opposed to the scary old man named Santa who is a real person!

Even though Blake isn’t smiling in this picture, he smiled during his visit and now that we finally have a picture without him crying, we are calling the visit a success!

What about you? Have you taken your kids to see the Easter Bunny yet? What was your experience like?
Happy Monday

Check-up time….It is too early for a drink?!!?!

This morning was Blake’s 18-20 month check-up. It did NOT go quite like this….

Image

No…our little guy didn’t smile at the doctor, or laugh when they listened to his heart. Oh no. Not even close.

I was prepared, though. The past several check-ups haven’t gone well. Blake usually screams and cries, getting red blotches all over his face, while Dean and I try to talk to the doctor about how our son is progressing. The result is always a room full of adults screaming because we can’t hear each other over Blake’s cries for help!

This time, I thought I would prepare him for his visit to the doctor days in advance. Every night this week before bed, we’ve read him Elmo Goes to the Doctor. In the story, Elmo gets a full check-up, including shots. Blake liked the story and I thought it would make a difference. We even practiced what Blake would say when he saw the doctor. He was going to proudly say, “I’m Blake!”. Didn’t happen.

As soon as he saw the nurse and she measured his head, the wailing began. It continued as she weighed him and measured his height.  The wails crescendoed  when the doctor entered the room. Blake threw a fit when he turned on his little light to look at his eyes and it got worse from there.

He also got three shots. I’ll just let you imagine how that went.

I did a variety of things to try and make this check-up better. I sang “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

I told him , “You are just like Elmo! Elmo loves going to the doctor!”. Silly mommy. He looked at me like I was crazy.

Blake screamed, “All done” and “Bye-Bye” at the top  of his lungs until we got out of the doctor’s office. I got sympathetic looks from other mother’s in the waiting room, as I left the office sweating and stressed. Good times had by all.

Other than the total melt-down, Blake is doing great and remains in the 75 percentile for height, weight and head size. Thank God we don’t need to go back until he’s two!

Do you have any similar stories? How do you handle taking you kids to the doctor? I clearly need some help!

Happy Friday everyone!

First visit to the library!

image

Yesterday, I finally took Blake to the library! This is something I’ve been meaning to do for months but we simply hadn’t gotten around to it. He absolutely loved it!
My little guy loves books more than any of his toys and he ran up and down the aisles of the library, yelling BOOKS! It was a lot of fun for me too.
Do your kids love the library? When did you start taking them to story hour?
Please share!

Traveling with Toddler

At the ripe old age of 17 months, our little guy has flown about a dozen times…give or take a few. During all of those journeys, I’ve learned a few things and I’ve also accepted that no matter how much you prepare, it is just plain hard traveling with a little one! Don’t get me wrong, even though it is stressful and nerve-racking, it is always worth it in the end.

Here are some things I’ve learned.

1.Buy your baby or tot a seat! Children under the age of two fly for free. Up until this last trip, we always traveled with Blake on our laps. That works if their are two adults plus baby. When I am traveling with Blake by myself, I learned that I need that extra seat for space alone! I’ve flown with Blake many times alone, with him on my lap. I was so squished, it was claustrophobic. I literally couldn’t move to get out his treats or bottle from the diaper bag under my seat, because the person sitting in the next seat was right on top of us. Also, other passengers may ooh and ahh over your cute baby,  but not one wants to sit next to a mom and baby. Last week, we finally bought Blake a ticket for the first time. While it is an expense, it was well worth it and made our trip A LOT easier!

2. There is NO consistency with the TSA…this next one really irritates me! As all of you regular travelers know…there is absolutely NO common sense when it comes to TSA agents and security AND there is NO consistency! Believe me, I want agents to be thorough and do everything they can to prevent another 9-11, but from my experience, that is NOT what they are doing. When I departed from airport 1, there were no hassles. I had some yogurt for Blake that was unopened. They scanned it. No big deal and we were done. Five days later when we left to come home from airport 2, I had the another unopened yogurt for Blake. That send these particular agents at airport 2 into a tailspin. Blake and I and our stroller were sent to a roped off area. I was patted down by an agent, all over my body, while my son watched in  horror. SERIOUSLY! Use common sense! I’m sorry but I believe in profiling…Not racial profiling…just creepy suspicious people profiling. While they were patting me down( a mom with a Gerber  yogurt! )someone truly dangerous could have passed through security. It is just ridiculous! My advice…drink wine when you land!

3. Don’t over pack your diaper bag! I’ve been guilty of this last tip…that’s how I learned to knock it off! I’m always a nervous wreck when I travel alone with Blake….what if the plane crashes…what if he throws a tantrum and won’t calm down…what if it is a really turbulent ride. That’s why I used to stuff as many books, snacks, etc into the diaper bag as possible. That only made my trip MUCH harder. Back in November, I tried to carry my 26 lbs son and a 20 lbs diaper bag by myself (once they take the stroller away at the gate, remember you have to carry everything including your tot!) I finally realized…I’m not going to a third world country, I can pick things up along the way. This time, I only brought three books, two baggies of snacks and two empty sippy cups. It all worked out much better than before.

Even following all these tips, I’m still stressed to the max when I travel alone with Blake. I can’t even really get excited about our destination until we land. It’s all worth it, though! Here’s some pictures that prove, in this case, it IS the destination, not the journey!

My brother Chris and Blake. They coincidentally dressed alike one day!

My mom and I playing with Blake on the beach.

Blake and Aunt Cassie swinging!

What are your travel tips when flying with little ones? Have you had any ridiculous TSA experiences? Do share!

TV for Toddlers

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel guilty when I let my son watch too much TV. Don’t get me wrong, I think a little TV is fine. When I first became pregnant, my husband and I quickly decided we weren’t going to be the kind of parents that never let their kids watch TV or eat sugar. To me, that’s just plain weird and not realistic. I think that kids who grew up never allowed to do “normal” things, like have a cookie or watch TV, end up rebelling and don’t understand how to live a balanced life with moderation.

That being said, I do try to limit Blake’s television intake. There is one show, however, that I let him watch almost everyday and I think it is just plain AWESOME. It’s called SuperWhy!

This cartoon is all about reading and learning letters and numbers. All of the characters are called “Super readers”. They sound out and spell words and I think this show is so educational, it’s even better than Sesame Street.

I’ve also really noticed a difference in Blake’s vocabulary and I credit SuperWhy for some of that. Blake can probably say around 40 words right now, which is pretty darn good for a 17 month old! My husband and I talk to him all the time, and I also take him to Gymboree class, swimming lessons and we’ve also done kindermusik.  I know he’s picked up a lot at those classes, but there are some words and letters that we haven’t gone over and he just knows them. My husband and I both think it’s because of SuperWhy. The show airs on PBS kids and the SPROUT Channel, which I also love.

What shows or programs have you found beneficial for your kids? I love getting advice and hearing from other moms. It’s so helpful! I hope your week is off to a great start!
