Reporter Turned Mommy

I’m back on the air!

Today’s post is more Reporter than Mommy. I recently started doing some freelance work for Parma Community General Hospital.

I absolutely love it! I am working with their amazing Public Relations and Marketing Team, doing medical stories for the web. I am writing, producing and reporting the stories on camera, just like I did while in TV news, but without the pressures of a newsroom. I’ve freelanced just a few days so far, but it has been a dream come true. I have missed story telling so much and to be able to work again, on a freelance basis, is ideal for the chapter of my life that I’m in right now.

You can check out my first story, on Parma Hospital’s state of the art 3DHD surgery center, by clicking HERE. The link is also listed below. I hope you check it out! We have two more stories that should be on the web soon and I’ll be sure to bring them to you. I hope you’re enjoying your Wednesday!

On Your Mark…

In a little more than two weeks, I’ll be walking in an event I do every year. It’s my husband, Former Parma Mayor Dean DePiero’s Ninth Annual 5k Run/2k Walk for Charity.

Dean started this race when he first became mayor nine years ago and even though he is no longer serving as mayor of Ohio’s seventh largest city, he is continuing to host and participate in this great Charity run.

This year, all proceeds benefit the Parma Hospital Health Care Foundation, a wonderful, non-profit that benefits the community in countless ways, through research and community outreach and wellness programs.

This year’s race takes place Saturday, June 23rd, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Parma’s own Byers Field. This race winds through the city on a flat, accurate course that is perfect for runners, walkers, dogs and strollers!

Above is a look at those participating in the 2k Walk.

I always walk with either our dog, Bailey….

(this is obviously an older picture!) or push Blake in the stroller.

Cleveland notables always stop by the race. Here’s a picture of Dean with Browns star Josh Cribbs.

This year, my former co-worker and our good buddy Bill Martin, the primary anchor at Fox 8, will serve as Emcee and also participate in the race!

Bill is also an ordained minister and he married Dean and I!

This is such a wonderful community event and, in fact, The Parma Area Chamber of Commerce just honored Dean’s 5k race/2k walk with the prestigious “Pride Award” for “Best Community Event.

We are hoping for as many runners and walkers as possible. You can register now by clicking HERE. Registration is $15.00 now and $20.00 on race. day. A portion of the registration is tax-deductible.

I hope you can come support this charity run/walk. There’s a whole team of people working hard to make sure it is a success!

Versatile Blogger Award!

Fun “Mommy Blogger” Mom on the Go in Holy Toledo presented me with the Versatile Blogger Award! That was so sweet of her to give me a shout out on her blog and I am so happy I can return the favor!

Here are the rules for the Versatile Blogger Award…

1. Thank the award-givers and link back to them in your post.

2. Share 7 things about yourself.

3. Pass this award along

4. Contact your chosen bloggers to let them know about the award.

Now here are 7 random things about me….

1. I studied abroad my junior year at Ohio University. I was one of four E.W. Scripps School of Journalism students selected to study journalism abroad. I spent Fall Quarter 1999 at the University of Wales in Cardiff, Wales.

2. Every time I go to a Broadway show, I wish I was up there performing with the cast. If I could only sing and dance! I feel the same way when I watch Glee!

3. I was editor of my high school newspaper and was named West Virginia High School Journalist of the Year. Here’s what I looked like back then! (pictures with my friend Jennifer who is still one of my bff’s)

Look at my bangs! Can you say “Coal Miner’s Daughter”?!! haha I was so afraid to get rid of my bangs back then. They were my security blanket!

4. My husband just finished his second full term as Mayor of Parma, Ohio at the end of 2011. It was a challenge, at times, while I was still reporting at Fox 8, because I had to recuse myself from covering stories in Parma, even basic breaking news. Management at my station also wouldn’t allow me to cover state or national elections anymore because of my husband’s elected position. That was VERY difficult for me.

5. My first name is actually Tara, after my mom, though I’ve never been called Tara. Kathleen is my middle name.

6. My husband and I honeymooned in Italy for 12 days and it was amazing! My favorite part was the Almalfi Coast and the City of Positano!

7. I never, in a million years, thought I would be a stay-at-home mom, but now that I’ve done it, I can’t imagine not spending all day with my son.

Now to pass on the Versatile Blogger Award!

A Weekend Gala

This weekend, we dusted off our party shoes, tuxes and cocktail dresses, to attend the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce Ball. This year, Dean was honored for his annual 5k run/walk for charity. Here is a picture of Dean and I all gussied up!

As you can see, I wore blue this year. I’d been in a dress rut for a while, wearing a simple black dress to almost every event we attend. It felt good to wear some color!

It was also nice to socialize and see everyone all dressed up.

Here’s a picture of my sister-in-law Laura, my friend Lynn and I.

Dean gave a great and BRIEF (love that!) acceptance speech, we mingled a little, then we were both so tired we headed home. We can’t hang like we used to! haha

In addition to the gala Saturday night, Friday, we had dinner at a great newer Italian restaurant in Parma called Vivo. It is a small, intimate place, on Ridge Road. We love it! I had salmon with a homemade risotto an it was out of this world!

This week, Blake and I are headed south to see my family in Hilton Head…we are looking forward to it! My parents and brother and SIL haven’t seen Blake since Christmas. It will also be nice to get out of the cold weather for a while!

How did you spend your weekend? Parents out there…are you as tired as I always am on Sundays? :)
