Reporter Turned Mommy

I’ve been thinking…..

Since I’ve been away, I’ve had a few things on my mind.

First off, Democratic Pundit Hilary Rosen really ticked me off, and I’m a democrat!

If you haven’t heard, she said Ann Romney never worked a day in her life. Mrs. Romney stayed home and raised her five sons. Yes, I know the Romney’s are millionaires, and yes, she probably had help. The comment still gets my blood boiling.

Democrats trying to “fix” Rosen’s comment have also managed to infuriate me. I couldn’t care less about the fortune of those running for president. I’m tired of the argument that because the Romney’s are wealthy, they can’t relate to the common man. Why? Because EVERY presidential candidate is wealthy, whether they were born that way or worked for it. I’m not saying that’s the way it should be, but that’s the way it is.

I could go on and on about this topic, but instead I’ll leave you with this tongue-in-cheek drawing from my friend Diane. We are both stay-at-home-moms and she posted this on my facebook wall. She titled it, “Ready to start my Monday”….haha. I love it! If only that’s what it was really like to be a stay-at-home-mom.

Next topic…I have a new obsession. SPARTINA 449

Spartina 449 was started by a woman who lives on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. Daufuskie is an Island right by Hilton Head. Her hand bags, clothes, and beautiful accessories are now in more than 1,000 stores.

Here’s a look at a few of my favorite items.

All of her items are very beachy and airy. I have a purse, wallet and apron. A portion of the proceeds also go to the Daufuskie Island Historical Society. You can check out more of her beach bags, purses, clothing and accessories by clicking here. Spartina 449 was also recently featured in Southern Living.

Lastly, I am still researching our family tree (on my family’s side) and I discovered a shocker! We are primarily Irish and English, and I thought that is all I would continue to find as I kept researching. My mother’s maiden name is Neely, which is a very Irish name and we were always told it was Irish and a form of McNeely. Well, notsomuch!

Neely is actually from Neleigh and it is German! GULP!

We were shocked. I had to go back to my mother’s sixth-great-grandparents to crack the code. I guess we will be celebrating Oktoberfest this year! :)

So….what are you?

This is the question everyone asks in Cleveland, “What are you?”. When I first moved here seven years ago, I had no idea what people were talking about. Most people who are from Cleveland are first, second or third generation Italian, Irish, Slovak, Polish, whatever, the list goes on and on.

I’m from south of the Mason-Dixon line and almost everyone I grew up with was just like me…their ancestors came to America a long, long time ago. When Clevelanders would ask what I “was”, I would say I’m a WASP (WHITE ANGLO SAXON PROTESTANT) from West Virginia!

We did have a few clues. I’ve always been told we were Irish and/or English on both my mom’s and dad’s side. My maiden name and my mom’s maiden name are both Irish sounding. So, just a few days ago, I decided to get serious about this “what am I” question and do some research!

This is my new obsession!

Ancestry.com

It is fascinating! I’m not going to bore you will all that I have found, but, after just a few hours online (this is my new entertainment after I put Blake to sleep!), I discovered that my great-great-great-great-grandparents on my dad’s side, were born in Ireland! So the rumors are true…we ARE Irish! They were both born in Donegal, Ireland and it appears both of their families immigrated to Pennsylvania via the Port in Philadelphia sometime in the late 1700′s, early 1800′s. They were married in 1805 in Pennsylvania!

I am so impressed that through Census records, birth and death certificates, and other family trees from those also researching their roots on ancestry.com, I was able to find all of this information!

I even found these photos of their grave sites.

They both lived to be 97 and 94 years old, respectively. I think it’s amazing they lived that long, especially back then!

Added bonus….so far I’ve gotten all this info for free…I joined ancestry.com for a free, two-week membership. Don’t worry…I’m not advertising for them…..they don’t know I exist! :)

While they were relatively easy to find, I’m having some trouble locating information on some other ancestors. The trail seems to end rather early. I’m not going to give up, though!

Have any of you ever traced your roots and if so, how did you do it? Have you ever used ancestry.com and what are some tips for finding people once the trail seems to run out? Did any of you have to hire someone to help you fill in the blanks? I would really appreciate any tips!
