Mommy and Me Pre-school

As a parent, we have those moments we dream about, like when your child takes their first steps, opens a birthday present we know they will love, or first says “I love you”.

I had a vision in my mind of what our first day of “Mommy and Me Pre-school” would be like. My two-year old, Blake, would be the star pupil, sitting quietly, learning new shapes and colors, while occasionally turning around to look up at me and smile. I would be so proud, photographing all the adorable moments. Well, this was another parenting moment that was not at ALL how I pictured it!

The class, which is once a week for an hour at a local church, started off very smoothly. Blake excitedly walked in and started playing. I call these pictures the “calm before the storm”.

Here Blake is with his teacher, Miss Melody. She helped each child put their hand-print in a children’s bible. So sweet.

The first 30-40 minutes of the class were spent playing and socializing. Blake and I are good at that! It also helps that I already knew three of the moms and their children from Gymboree class.

Then it came time to put the toys away and do activities in “circle time”. Here’s where things get interesting. My little angel threw a holy tantrum! We’re not just talking a few tears. We’re talking a throwing himself on the floor, screaming meltdown because he wasn’t ready to stop playing. As I struggled to pick him up (keep in mind I’m nearly 8 months pregnant!), and calm him down, I noticed all the other angelic two-year olds sitting quietly in a circle, waiting for the next activity to begin. Blake continued his fit and continuously ran out the door of the pre-school room, into the hallway. As mothers gave me sympathetic looks, I was trying to figure out how to best handle this situation. I didn’t want to physically force him into the circle. I knew that would only make matters worse. So while all the kids sang songs and listened to a story, Blake and I watched from the hallway. Between my frustration and pregnancy hormones, I almost burst into tears!

So following our first day of “school”, I sent an apologetic e-mail to the teacher, also asking for advice on how to handle my strong-willed toddler. Luckily, she was more than understanding and gave me some great tips. She says many toddlers have a hard time transitioning from play time to circle time and suggested I give him a special treat, like a juice box, when it is time to stop playing. We have also been practicing transitions at home, so that he is hopefully more prepared for what to expect at school.

We go back tomorrow, so we will see how it goes! I’ve got my fingers crossed!

Have any of you had similar experiences? If so, I’d love to hear them and your advice!

And the winner is….

Short and sweet post today. I’m still not feeling well and the only thing I can eat is saltines. Good news…our very own Mary Poppins…aka my mom…is on her way here from south of the Maxon-Dixon, to help out! She was already planning on coming today and hopefully we aren’t contagious any more!

Other good news….after much deliberation and searching, we picked out some patio furniture. The winner is…

This four piece wicker set from Target! It’s a great value for the whole set and we think it will look perfect in our new backyard! Now we still need to get some lounge chairs and possibly another patio table and chairs. This is a great start, though!

That’s it for this Wed. I’m as weak as can be. We also feel awful because we gave this crazy virus to our SIL and our nine year old nephew. We are praying my BIL (hubby’s brother) doesn’t get it! Another family from our Gymboree class is also sick. Ugh. Hope you had a great Valentine’s Day….you can imagine what ours was like! haha It was actually nice, even if we were sick.

TV for Toddlers

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel guilty when I let my son watch too much TV. Don’t get me wrong, I think a little TV is fine. When I first became pregnant, my husband and I quickly decided we weren’t going to be the kind of parents that never let their kids watch TV or eat sugar. To me, that’s just plain weird and not realistic. I think that kids who grew up never allowed to do “normal” things, like have a cookie or watch TV, end up rebelling and don’t understand how to live a balanced life with moderation.

That being said, I do try to limit Blake’s television intake. There is one show, however, that I let him watch almost everyday and I think it is just plain AWESOME. It’s called SuperWhy!

This cartoon is all about reading and learning letters and numbers. All of the characters are called “Super readers”. They sound out and spell words and I think this show is so educational, it’s even better than Sesame Street.

I’ve also really noticed a difference in Blake’s vocabulary and I credit SuperWhy for some of that. Blake can probably say around 40 words right now, which is pretty darn good for a 17 month old! My husband and I talk to him all the time, and I also take him to Gymboree class, swimming lessons and we’ve also done kindermusik.  I know he’s picked up a lot at those classes, but there are some words and letters that we haven’t gone over and he just knows them. My husband and I both think it’s because of SuperWhy. The show airs on PBS kids and the SPROUT Channel, which I also love.

What shows or programs have you found beneficial for your kids? I love getting advice and hearing from other moms. It’s so helpful! I hope your week is off to a great start!
