Reporter Turned Mommy

Think Pink

October is quickly winding to a close, but it is still Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Just yesterday, a good friend and former Fox 8 colleague, announced live, on-air that she is battling breast cancer. My buddy, Stacey Frey,

(Stacey is picture here, the first from the left. This was taken during one of our Fox 8 Girl’s Nights)

was surrounded by her son, Aiden and husband, John, as she made the emotional announcement. You can see what she had to say by clicking on the link below.

http://fox8.com/2012/10/23/fox-8s-stacey-frey-announces-breast-cancer/

I talked to Stacey for a while yesterday. Luckily, she caught the cancer early through self-examination. She is undergoing surgery this morning and I know she will get through it with flying colors. If you believe in the power of prayer, as I do, please say a prayer for Stacey today.

I also recently did a story for Parma Community General Hospital on new breast cancer screening technology. Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is now available at PCGH. This new, 3D way to see the breast, can possibly eliminate a step in the breast cancer screening process because the image is so much sharper and more “real” to life. Anyone can opt to upgrade to a 3D Mammogram during their annual exam. Even if you choose not to upgrade to tomosynthesis, the traditional, 2d mammogram is still an excellent screening tool and it saves lives.

You can learn more about tomosynthesis and check out my story by clicking on the link below.

Remember, if you are over the age of 40, have a family history of breast cancer or notice something abnormal, get a mammogram!

Enjoy this beautiful fall day.

On Your Mark…

In a little more than two weeks, I’ll be walking in an event I do every year. It’s my husband, Former Parma Mayor Dean DePiero’s Ninth Annual 5k Run/2k Walk for Charity.

Dean started this race when he first became mayor nine years ago and even though he is no longer serving as mayor of Ohio’s seventh largest city, he is continuing to host and participate in this great Charity run.

This year, all proceeds benefit the Parma Hospital Health Care Foundation, a wonderful, non-profit that benefits the community in countless ways, through research and community outreach and wellness programs.

This year’s race takes place Saturday, June 23rd, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Parma’s own Byers Field. This race winds through the city on a flat, accurate course that is perfect for runners, walkers, dogs and strollers!

Above is a look at those participating in the 2k Walk.

I always walk with either our dog, Bailey….

(this is obviously an older picture!) or push Blake in the stroller.

Cleveland notables always stop by the race. Here’s a picture of Dean with Browns star Josh Cribbs.

This year, my former co-worker and our good buddy Bill Martin, the primary anchor at Fox 8, will serve as Emcee and also participate in the race!

Bill is also an ordained minister and he married Dean and I!

This is such a wonderful community event and, in fact, The Parma Area Chamber of Commerce just honored Dean’s 5k race/2k walk with the prestigious “Pride Award” for “Best Community Event.

We are hoping for as many runners and walkers as possible. You can register now by clicking HERE. Registration is $15.00 now and $20.00 on race. day. A portion of the registration is tax-deductible.

I hope you can come support this charity run/walk. There’s a whole team of people working hard to make sure it is a success!

Celebrity Judge-Chili Cookoff!

The Autism Society of Greater Cleveland asked me to be a “celebrity” judge for its annual Chili Cookoff. Of course I said yes! I am so honored that the Autism Society thought of me to help with the special event, especially since I haven’t been on TV in 19 months.

I want to share the details for this fun night for those of you in the Cleveland area, in the hopes that you can come out, have some fun and support this great cause. There are many Cleveland bloggers I’ve been hoping to meet and this would be a great opportunity to do so.

Here are the details:

I’m looking forward to tasting and “judging” all the chili! Any tips on what makes the perfect bowl?

There will also be live music from the “Ace Molar” Band, featuring Fox 8′s Todd Meany as the lead singer.  I know it’s going to be a fun night and I hope to see some friends and meet some new ones as well. Hope to see you next Tuesday (April 3rd) night!

In the meantime, how was your weekend? I hope your week is off to a great start!

Yep, I’m the reporter attacked by the cat

I own it. There’s no running from it. I was attacked by a cat on live television. It was almost five years ago. Since then I’ve gotten married, won an Emmy and been nominated for two more, covered two nationally televised murder trials, had a baby, but I will be forever known as the “reporter attacked by the cat”. If you’ve never seen the video, I’m going to make it easy for you. Here it is.

Why am I bringing this up, you ask? A local news anchor in Denver just joined my “sisterhood”. Welcome, my friend, to the “I was attacked by an animal on live television club”. If you missed the clip…here it is…

Here’s what you get with your membership:

1. More youtube hits than you can ever imagine

2. More haters than you can ever imagine…even though in both our cases the animals clearly won the battle. We are the bad guys to the haters. Animal rights activists will think you are just awful.

3.Calls from all the networks. The day after my cat attack, Fox 8 got calls from THE TONIGHT SHOW with Jay Leno...(our GM wouldn’t let me go on because they are NBC and we are FOX, I was very disappointed!) ABC News, Animal Planet, E! News, I could go on and on.

4. No matter what you do from this point forward in your career, you will always be remembered as the anchor who got attacked by the dog!

In my case, I was fine. The cat had claws and I was scratched, but physically, I was fine. That’s not the case for the Denver News Anchor. She had to have reconstructive surgery on her lip. I really feel for her and I hope that this injury will not effect her career.

Years ago, before the internet and youtube, those of us in the television business could have a flub on air and it would show up on the company Christmas Party blooper reel and that was it. Now, it follows us everywhere. That’s why it’s important to laugh at yourself (which is actually what I was doing right after I was attacked…that’s my personality..i.e….if you fall down in front of me, I’ll be laughing as I help you up…it’s a character flaw, but I own that too!). Even now, years after the infamous attack, I’ll have people come over to me at dinner and bring up the attack and I still get e-mails about it. It’s fine and it’s funny. I just hope this Denver News Anchor chooses not to read ANY of the comments about her attack on youtube and other internet sites. I saw a few the morning after my incident and I made a decision not to look at them. I can’t control what other people say but I CAN control what I look at.

I hope this made you laugh (my attack, not hers!) on this Friday and that you have a wonderful weekend!

Whatever Wed..including Pinterset update, BB Cream review and More!

Lots of random thoughts today! We are on the hunt for patio furniture. We moved to a new house this past Oct, from a three-story cluster. At our old home, we had a double-deck, but no backyard, so we have very little patio furniture. I’m told NOW is the time to buy patio furniture, so I’m on the hunt! Here are some sets I’ve found online that I like.

I found this set at Overstock.com

I’ve been looking at lots of sites online and, shocker, I even started a patio furniture Pinboard on Pinterest!Yes, I gave the site a scathing review a few weeks ago, but now that I’ve spend a little time on it and learned how to use it, I’m a believer! You can check out my Patio Furniture Pinboard Here!

Also, this weekend is the Great Big Home and Garden Expo at the IX Center here in Cleveland.

We go every year to get ideas for our home. The displays are always very impressive! Two years ago, I MC’d an event at the show with Cheryl Tiegs. That’s when I was still working at Fox 8. Here’s a picture of us on stage…we coincidentally dressed alike! She was a spokesperson for Cambria Quartz Countertops at the time. She was very friendly and we had a good time! The only strange thing? She told me she hates all sweets and chocolate! I don’t think we could ever be friends! haha

Next Whatever Wednesday….I tried BB Cream! I blogged about it last month and you can read all about the new beauty balm that is the latest “it” item, here.

I found one that was only $12.99 at Target. It is the Garnier BB Cream.

I used it yesterday and I really like it. It is light…not at heavy as a tinted moisturizer, but is great for just running errands or as a primer or sunscreen. I also like the price…much better than some I saw online going for more than 70 bucks!

Ok…lots of different topics in Whatever Wednesday! Any patio furniture recommendations? I’d love to hear them!
