We moved into a new neighborhood about ten months ago. Since then, we really haven’t had the opportunity to meet many of our neighbors. Busy schedules and life in general made it hard for us to get to know those who live in our development.
My husband and I decided to try and change that by throwing a “Get to Know You” Party. I put these invitations in our neighbor’s mailboxes.
I then ordered party trays from Ritos, one of our local Italian bakeries.
We served simple cold cuts, cheeses, potato salad…
Sicilian style pizza…
White Pizza…
And an amazing dessert tray!
I also had name tags for everyone…
and a guest book, so we could remember which neighbors lived in each house.
The party was a huge success! We had 100% attendance, which meant so much to Dean and I. I don’t have any pictures of the actual party because I was too busy getting to know my neighbors!
We are so glad we hosted this party and, more importantly, that we now know who lives in the surrounding houses.
How did you get to know your neighbors? Does your neighborhood host block or neighborhood parties? That’s our next goal!

I’m so glad it was a success! Paul & I should follow your example!
What an awesome idea!
thank you! I’m so glad we did it!
That is such a wonderful idea and the food looks delicious. We have lived in our home for over 8 years and I still don’t know some of our neighbors. Life happens, babies are born, and before you know it the time has flown. Do you think we could still get away with throwing a “Get to know you party” after 8 years, lol? Glad to read you had 100% attendance that is awesome!
I think you should do it anyway! It’s never too late to get to know your neighbors! If you’re really interested in the idea, I would do it soon, so you can have the party outside, and do it on a weeknight. Weekends in the summer are so busy for everyone but a weeknight is perfect. I am sure that is why we had 100% attendance!
Good point, everyone is so busy on the weekend. Thank you for the tips I will take those into consideration.
Great idea!! Unfortunately, we don’t have a very active neighborhood and very few kids.
What a nice ideal, although your neighbors should have made a point to get to know you when you moved in, too.
When new people move into our ‘hood I always take over a housewarmer gift and card congratulating them on their new house and welcoming them to the neighborhood. I also include a copy of a recent edition to the local paper so they get started reading about local events. Other neighbors have also made meals or taken pizza over while new neighbors are moving in.
hmm we just got final loan approval and move into our house on the 25th perhaps we’ll have to think about something like this.
I am so glad we did it and I know you would be, too! My best advice is to do it on a weeknight, not a weekend. Weekends are so busy for everyone and if you do it on a weeknight, I’m sure you will have better attendance. Good luck with your move!
