Reporter Turned Mommy

Summer Update

I can’t believe Aug. 1st is this Wednesday! The summer is flying by and we have been on the move! Last week, Dean and I celebrated our four year wedding anniversary and my parents also came to visit to celebrate my Dad’s 60th Birthday.

For the occasion, I made my dad a special Graham Cracker Cream Pie that his mother always used to  make for him on his birthday.

Here we are, displaying the pie! I “practiced” making the pie a few weeks ago and I think it turned out really well. The recipe dates back to 1949.

If you would like the recipe, let me know and I will send it to you!

We spent our weekend at the Lake Erie Islands, taking in the sunsets and a carnival that was in town.

Blake rode some rides…

…and tried cotton candy for the first time!

Sunday night, Dean and I went to the Brothers of the Sun Tour at Browns Stadium and saw Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney. It was amazing and the perfect night for an outdoor concert!

Here I am, in my concert gear, showing off my six month baby bump!

We’ve got a busy week ahead and I hope to order Blake’s “big boy” furniture sometime this week. I’ll let you know what we decide.

My mom always says August reminds her of a big, long Sunday and that’s how I feel as we approach this “last” month of summer. We have so much to do before the hectic fall days begin and I also feel the need to do as much outside as we can!

“Big Boy Furniture” and the Double Stroller

Baby #2 is going to be here before we know it and we have A LOT to do!

Image

Here’s a look at my “baby bump”. This is one of bestie’s, Brooke, and I, taken at her bridal shower last weekend.

Our goal is to get Blake, who turns two next month, into a “big boy bed” by September.

Image

We want our little guy to have enough time to adjust to his new bed and dresser before the baby arrives. We also don’t want him to think his younger sibling stole all of his stuff!

I don’t use Pinterest very much, but I do find it very useful when shopping for big ticket items. I just created a “Big Boy Furniture” Pinboard here.

Here are a few bed and furniture sets I like.

Image

This set is from Pottery Barn Kids. I like the low to the floor setting on the twin bed. With rails, I think Blake would be very secure in this bed. The problem? As you know, PBK can be pricey and I can’t seem to find a mirror to go with ANY of their bed/dresser set.

Image

I really like this set from JC Penny and the price is right. We could also dress it up with accents from Pottery Barn Kids. The problem? It is only on-line and in the catalog, so we can’t actually look at it. Blake’s current dresser/changing table and mirror came from JC Penny, though, and it is very good quality.

Image

I love this lighter, pine bed and the matching shelf from Pottery Barn Kids. Same issues, though, no mirror and pricey.

Lastly, if we were to splurge and put Blake into a bed he would only love for a few years, it would be this one!

Image

This boat bed is absolutely adorable! However, it’s an extravagance in my book and how many years is he going to want to sleep in a boat bed?

A new trend seems to be trundle beds, like this one.

Image

The Trundle seems to be the new “bunk bed”. Though it seems like ages before Blake will have his first sleep over, I know those days will be here before we know it. Since we are hoping to purchase a bed he will be in until adolescence, is it worth it get get a trundle? I need advice parents!

On to the next item of business….THE DOUBLE STROLLER.

Baby Talk Magazine just did a feature on strollers and the Valco Baby Zee Two’s double stroller seemed to get the best review.

Image

However, I’ve heard that “side by side” double strollers can be difficult to maneuver in stores and entryways. I need advice parents! What double strollers to you like/recommend?  Blake will be 27 months when the new baby arrives and even though he may not want to be in a stroller anymore, for my sanity, he will need to be restrained in public places!

I’m looking forward to hearing what you think and getting your advice. I need to order these items fairly soon, since shipping can often take six-eight weeks.

I hope you are enjoying your week and staying cool in these 95-plus degree days!

Dog Days of Summer and Avocado Ice Pops!

It’s been more than a month since I’ve blogged. I’ve basically decided to take most of the summer off from blogging because I’m not always in a place with a great internet connection. As I’ve mentioned before, we spend a lot of our summer at the Lake Erie Islands, (think the Hamptons for Clevelanders, only MUCH more laid back! haha) and my cell phone and internet connections there are very spotty.

It’s been a great summer so far. I am now more than half-way through my pregnancy and Blake is growing and learning more everyday! Here’s a look at some of the things we’ve been up to.

Image

We took Blake to Cedar Point one Saturday in June. He was able to ride four rides in SnoopyLand with Mommy and Daddy! He liked three of the four, and is now obsessed with Snoopy!

Image

Blake also loves boating! This was a huge relief. We took him on the boat last summer, too, but he was so little and we weren’t sure how he would do this summer. Luckily, he loves it!

The days are flying by. I think the following picture sums up what summer is all about! No caption needed! :)

Image

I’ve also started some new activities. I’m now doing Aqua Zumba and I love it!

Image

They offer it at our local YMCA and I’m doing it with a girlfriend of mine who is also pregnant. It’s a great workout, especially now! I’d never done Zumba before and I love that I can do the moves underwater and no one can tell if I’m doing them correctly! :)

I’ve also tried a few new summer recipes that the whole family is enjoying. The one I’m going to share sounds weird, but if you like avocados, you will like these….frozen avocado pops!

Blake loves them!

Image

I got the recipe from People Magazine and Chicago chef Rick Bayless.

Here it is…

1. Boil 2 cups water

2. Add 1 cup sugar and summer until dissolved, cool completely

3. Mash 2 medium avocados

4. Stir in water and 1/2 cup lime juice and fold in 1/2 cup chopped mint (I skipped the mint)

5. Pour into ice pop molds and freeze overnight

If you make these, let me know what you think!

I hope you all are enjoying your summer as much as we are. I’ll be updating as much as I can. In the meantime, relish this time of year…it’s definitely my favorite!
