Reporter Turned Mommy

Why God made girlfriends

It is hard to feel sad when you focus on being grateful. That’s what I’m trying to do. I don’t want to delve into all that my family has been through in the past 22 months. However, to give you some perspective, in less than two years, we lost our 13 and 16 year old niece and nephew, Erin and Andrew, in a car accident.

Five months later, my father-in-law died in a tragic car accident (it appears he had a heart attack behind the wheel).

Blake was four weeks old at the time. Less than three months after my father-in-law’s death, my mother-in-law had a stroke, followed by cancer. Thank god she is still with us and miraculously, she’s doing pretty well. Things were calm for a while, then I had my miscarriage in November, and on Thursday, we lost my sister-in-law’s long-time boyfriend, Jeff, who was a brother-in-law to us.

To have this much happen to one family in less than two years, is unheard of. Throughout all of this, I’ve had amazing support from my girlfriends, in particular, my friend DeAnna.

While I am an outgoing, social person, I get very quiet when it comes to tragedy. I don’t pick up or return phone calls because I can’t physically speak of what’s happened. As a reporter, I could detach myself from the situation, but when tragedies have occurred in my own life, I need time to process the pain before I talk about it. DeAnna gets that about me. She also doesn’t let me get away with it!

Last Thursday, while dealing with the shock of losing Jeff and trying to do my best to help our family, I wouldn’t pick up or return phone calls. DeAnna knows when I need her (even if I don’t even realize it myself) and she called my husband to make sure she talked to me. While I’m trying to help everyone else, she always asks how I am and  gives me the ten minute break on the phone, away from chaos, to talk about my feelings. She also understands that sometimes I may just rather text than talk on the phone. Throughout our friendship, she has never judged me, is not jealous of my friendships with other girlfriends, and genuinely cheers me on in my endeavors.

DeAnna and I met when I was the morning anchor at News 14 Carolina in Charlotte. She was a producers at Fox Charlotte. She thought I was stuck-up at first (I don’t know what because I was very nice! we joke about that now) but we quickly became friends when we both joined the Junior League. DeAnna was a bridesmaid in my wedding and is a rock in my life.

She also encouraged me to start blogging! She’s been blogging for a few years now. You can check out her blog here.

So today, I’m grateful for my good friend who has helped me through one heck of a couple of years. I just hope I’m as a good a friend to her as she is to me. Who are the girlfriends that have helped you through tough times? I’d love to hear your stories.

Prayer and positive thinking

image

Our family was delt a major blow Thursday when we learned of the sudden death of a family member. My sister in law’s (husband’s sister) long time boyfriend died in his sleep. He was only 45. As we are coping with this loss, I am trying to ease my own anxiety through prayer and positive thoughts. The book THE SECRET is comforting to me. The next few days will be hectic. Prayers for our family are appreciated.

Farewell, Conch Republic!

I started our last full day in Key West with a one hour massage on the beach. It was amazing! I’d never had a massage on the beach and whenever I can do it again, I will! It was so relaxing to feel the sun and hear the waves during my massage. The spa was outside, in a little tiki hut! Sorry, no pics of that.

My SILS also got massages and while we were getting pampered, the boys rented scooters! Check it out!

Image

Here’s Matt in the back, Chris and Dean! We hopped on the back and rode around with the guys for about an hour and found a great place for lunch! I’ve got to admit, I was not a fan of this. I was nervous, thought it was dangerous and Dean and I almost got hit by an SUV! No thanks!

After lunch, we lounged by the pool, then got ready for our grand finale night out!

I’m a big fan of Lilly, so I got a few Lilly Dresses for the trip and some new Lilly wedge sandals!

Image

Here we are in front of Casa Marina.

Image

Here are my “infamous” Lilly wedges! I’m showing you these because hubby was NOT happy I was wearing them! He went on and on and on about how I would NEVER be able to walk in these shoes all night, asking me over and over WHY I had to wear them! My SILS and I were cracking up, until, as it turns out, I had blisters all over my feet and couldn’t walk another step! More on that in a moment!

Here’s a look at our whole group before our final night in out!

Image

We planned on going to a nice dinner at a swanky restaurant, but canceled our plans after having too much fun listening to live music on Deval St!

As you can see, we were having a blast!

Image

This was at Irish Kevin’s. I loved it there! The live music was all country (my favorite!) and the singer even sang Country Roads for me since I’m from West Virginia! I could have stayed there all night!

We all ended up getting dinner on our own and my feet couldn’t last another second! (Yes, Dean, you were right!) Dean and I ended up taking a rickshaw, peddled by some Russian college kid, back to our hotel. I thought it was hilarious…Dean wasn’t as amused!

Image

Look at this poor kid’s sweaty t-shirt! He certainly earned his money!

Image

Dean totally annoyed and not feeling the charm of the rickshaw! LOL! I promised him I would never wear those shoes again… when we have to walk alot!

We got back home late Monday and we were so happy and excited to see our little boy! Adult only trips are great, but it’s even better coming home to your little family!

Here’s one last picture of the SILS and our hotel, Casa Marina Resort. We can’t wait to go somewhere warm again next year! Suggestions anyone?Image

Key West Revealed!

Every year, we plan a trip with my husband’s brothers and their wives. We call it the BILS and SILS weekend! We all get along and travel so well together! Dean’s brother Chris and his wife Laura (one of my BFF’s!) live here locally. Dean’s other brother, Matt and his wife MJ, live in Atlanta, so our annual trip is one of the few times a year where we can spend quality time together.

We always have a blast! We all arrived in Key West at different times on Friday, but the first thing we did was change out of our Cleveland winter clothes and into tropical attire! After a quick outdoor lunch on Duval St., we spent the rest of the day poolside at our hotel, Casa Marina,…it was at least 80 degrees!

Dean and I poolside at  the Casa Marina resort in Key West.

The brothers at the Tiki bar! Dean is the baby, but he and Matt look like twins!

MJ and I showing off my farmer’s tan! It took me all of 20 mins to get sunburned! That farmer’s tan you see there? I got that from simply eating outside wearing a short-sleeved polo shirt when we first arrived! Gotta love my fair Irish skin!

You’ll also notice our children are not with us. We do this trip every year without kiddos. My parents were gracious enough to come in and watch Blakey.

After spending the day by the pool, we walked to an AWESOME restaurant very close to our hotel, Louie’s Backyard.

Several people recommended this restaurant to us and it was delicious. We ate outside by the water. We were all so tired from traveling (and a 4am wake up call to make our 6:30am flight Friday!) that I didn’t take pictures during our first dinner. I know…bad blogger!

I made up for it in the morning, when we got up early and took a walk around Key West! We stopped for pictures just blocks from our hotel at the Southernmost Point in the US!

We also stumbled upon Ernest Hemingway’s house!

Beautiful home! There was some strange old man asleep on the front porch in a rocking chair. We didn’t take the tour so I didn’t find out what that man was up to!

Right around the corner from Hemingway’s house is my favorite find in Key West…a place my parents told me we HAD to have breakfast,,,and they were right….BLUE HEAVEN! This restaurant is awesome…but it’s not just the food I’m talking about…it’s the atmosphere. Take a look…

Yes, those are LIVE roosters walking around the outdoor restaurant. Crazy! They were also flying above our heads, causing Dean and BIL Chris to dodge out of the way. It was hilarious!

The food there was amazing. All the breads are homemade and they have live music everyday from 10am until midnight. I liked it so much, we came here twice! Also…check out their homemade Key Lime Pie and the meringue! I had some and it was un-be-liev-able!

I wish I was eating a piece of that pie right now! Soooo good!

The rest of the day Saturday was spent by the pool. We headed out Saturday night for a casual pub crawl on Deval St., beginning with sunset at Mallory Square and the Sunset Pier. All of the street entertainment there is definitely something to see.

We hit lots of spots on Saturday. Here’s hubby at the famous Sloppy Joe’s! It smelled like a gross college bar in there. Yuk!

Matt found the Green Parrot…it’s supposed to be the oldest bar in Key West, or something like that!

Dean, me Laura and Chris watching the sunset at Mallory Square!

Love this picture of the sunset!

The rest of the night we hit a few hot spots on Duval and had a light dinner. We were in bed every night by ten and up every morning by 7:30. That’s how I like to vacation!

Tomorrow, I’ll have more on the rest of our trip, including our grand finale night!

Have you been to Key West? If so, where did you stay and what did you do? This was my first trip to the Keys and I know I’ll be back!

Destination Revealed!

Temperatures in the mid-80′s, blue skies, bright sunshine, sand beneath my toes…and live chickens and roosters around every corner…where were we you ask? KEY WEST BABY!

My husband and I,  his two brothers, Chris and Matt, and their wives, Laura and MJ, all spent a long weekend at the Casa Marina Resort in Key West!

Casa Marina is a Waldorf Astoria hotel and the only hotel in Key West with its own, private beach!

Here’s a look at our beach at sunset.

Here’s our happy clan! From left, Chris is in white, behind him Matt and MJ, Laura and of course Dean and I! This is a shot of us watching the sunset at Mallory Square!

Over the next few days, I’ll be posting about our trip. In the meantime, I have a lot to take care of around here. Once I get settled, I’ll take you through our trip and show you our favorite spots during our long weekend in Key West!

How did you spend your Presidents Day Weekend?

And the winner is….

Short and sweet post today. I’m still not feeling well and the only thing I can eat is saltines. Good news…our very own Mary Poppins…aka my mom…is on her way here from south of the Maxon-Dixon, to help out! She was already planning on coming today and hopefully we aren’t contagious any more!

Other good news….after much deliberation and searching, we picked out some patio furniture. The winner is…

Image

This four piece wicker set from Target! It’s a great value for the whole set and we think it will look perfect in our new backyard! Now we still need to get some lounge chairs and possibly another patio table and chairs. This is a great start, though!

That’s it for this Wed. I’m as weak as can be. We also feel awful because we gave this crazy virus to our SIL and our nine year old nephew. We are praying my BIL (hubby’s brother) doesn’t get it! Another family from our Gymboree class is also sick. Ugh. Hope you had a great Valentine’s Day….you can imagine what ours was like! haha It was actually nice, even if we were sick.

Outbreak!

As Emily Blunt says in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, “I’m just one stomach flu away from my goal weight!”.

Since Friday at midnight, we’ve been dealing with one killer stomach flu in the DePiero household! It’s been miserable. Fri night, our little guy woke up and threw up all over his crib. This has never happened before and he hasn’t been sick in 10 months. I was absolutely panicked!

As Blakey started to feel better, the virus spread to my husband and I. We both woke up Monday morning with the worst stomach flu either of us can remember. Dean stayed home from work…something he has NEVER done in his professional career. Our biggest question…how to take care of a toddler while we are both so sick? Luckily, Blake was so good and he entertained himself most of the day. We put on his favorite cartoons and were too sick to feel guilty about him watching so much TV. Oh, how I wished for a Mary Poppins to come and take care of us all!

Last night, we were all in bed by 7pm! Today, my husband feels 100% back to normal. I’m about 60%…still feel a little shakey and can’t eat much.

The only good thing? I may now have reached my goal weight! There’s always a silver lining!

Has this flu or norovirus that’s going around hit your house? What are your plans for Valentine’s Day? My plan was/is to cook a nice dinner for our family. Jury is still out on whether or not I’ll be doing that. To be continued….

Winter whiteout!

We woke up to this! It is actually really fun and cozy to wake up to tons of snow on a Saturday morning. We’ve hardly had any snow this winter…so bring it on mother nature!

Yep, I’m the reporter attacked by the cat

I own it. There’s no running from it. I was attacked by a cat on live television. It was almost five years ago. Since then I’ve gotten married, won an Emmy and been nominated for two more, covered two nationally televised murder trials, had a baby, but I will be forever known as the “reporter attacked by the cat”. If you’ve never seen the video, I’m going to make it easy for you. Here it is.

Why am I bringing this up, you ask? A local news anchor in Denver just joined my “sisterhood”. Welcome, my friend, to the “I was attacked by an animal on live television club”. If you missed the clip…here it is…

Here’s what you get with your membership:

1. More youtube hits than you can ever imagine

2. More haters than you can ever imagine…even though in both our cases the animals clearly won the battle. We are the bad guys to the haters. Animal rights activists will think you are just awful.

3.Calls from all the networks. The day after my cat attack, Fox 8 got calls from THE TONIGHT SHOW with Jay Leno...(our GM wouldn’t let me go on because they are NBC and we are FOX, I was very disappointed!) ABC News, Animal Planet, E! News, I could go on and on.

4. No matter what you do from this point forward in your career, you will always be remembered as the anchor who got attacked by the dog!

In my case, I was fine. The cat had claws and I was scratched, but physically, I was fine. That’s not the case for the Denver News Anchor. She had to have reconstructive surgery on her lip. I really feel for her and I hope that this injury will not effect her career.

Years ago, before the internet and youtube, those of us in the television business could have a flub on air and it would show up on the company Christmas Party blooper reel and that was it. Now, it follows us everywhere. That’s why it’s important to laugh at yourself (which is actually what I was doing right after I was attacked…that’s my personality..i.e….if you fall down in front of me, I’ll be laughing as I help you up…it’s a character flaw, but I own that too!). Even now, years after the infamous attack, I’ll have people come over to me at dinner and bring up the attack and I still get e-mails about it. It’s fine and it’s funny. I just hope this Denver News Anchor chooses not to read ANY of the comments about her attack on youtube and other internet sites. I saw a few the morning after my incident and I made a decision not to look at them. I can’t control what other people say but I CAN control what I look at.

I hope this made you laugh (my attack, not hers!) on this Friday and that you have a wonderful weekend!

Kathleen
